The James Beard Foundation recently announced semifinalists for the coveted James Beard Award, a food and beverage industry recognition on par with the Oscars and the Grammys. Eight Utah restaurants made the cut, proving that our state’s dining scene is a star on the rise.
In the past, Utah’s restaurants have made us proud by reaching the semi-finals and finals rounds, but nobody from the Beehive State has taken home an award … yet. Could 2026 be the year? We sure hope so.
Here are Utah’s 2026 James Beard Award Nominees
Best new restaurant: Junah (SLC)
Outstanding bar: Post Office Place (SLC)
Outstanding professional in beverage service: Sara Sergent, Alpine Distilling Social Aid & Pleasure Club (Park City)
Best Chef: Mountain region (CO, ID, MT, UT, WY)

- Andrew Fuller, Oquirrh
- Travis Herbert, Felt Bar & Eatery
- Tommy Nguyen, The Pearl
- Nick Zocco, Urban Hill
The Takeaways
While chefs Andrew Fuller (Oquirrh) and Nick Zocco (Urban Hill), and downtown Salt Lake City bar Post Office Place have been deservedly recognized by the James Beard Award committee in past years, it’s exciting to see some new names pop up this cycle. Chefs Felipe Oliveira and Hiro Tagai at Junah for best new restaurant, as well as three established Utah chefs—Milo Carrier (Arlo), Travis Herbert (Felt Bar & Eatery) and Tommy Nguyen (The Pearl)—are getting what some would say is some overdue recognition for excellence. And adding yet another feather to her gaily bedecked chapeau of awards, Alpine Distilling’s master distiller Sara Sergent secured a semifinalist spot in one of the national beverage categories for superior spirits service and education.
What’s next?
The shortlist of restaurant, chef and beverage finalists will be announced by the James Beard Awards on March 31, and final awards are bestowed in Chicago on June 15.
