Open Streets on Main Returns for Two Weekends in July

By Community

For the past four summers Salt Lake City residents and business-owners have become acquainted with a concept known as Open Streets on Main, when the bustling street is closed down to become a pedestrian-only promenade. Originally created in 2020 to combat socio-economic effects of the pandemic, the summertime experience has been slowly diminishing in relevance and support until Open Streets was paused in 2023.

In its earliest iteration, Open Streets on Main saw extreme success with both residents and business owners. In some cases boosting revenue up to 19%, according to The Department of Economic Development. However, now that Covid-era emergency orders have ended, the popular event found itself strung up in red tape and did not return for the summer in 2023.

Despite the hiatus, members of the Downtown Alliance and Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall still view Open Streets as a positive community activity and have returned in 2024 with a fresh take on the summer event. “I am pleased to announce the return of Downtown Open Streets,” said Mendenhall. “Open Streets fosters community in the heart of the city with an electric atmosphere that prioritizes pedestrians and families while supporting our small businesses. I am grateful for our city staff and the Downtown Alliance, who make this possible and help us showcase a Main Street pedestrian promenade that is walkable, small business-focused, and inviting to all.” Now taking place during two July weekends, Open Streets have collaborated with artist organizations like The Blocks Art District and Alleyways Amplified to present two headline events. Kicking off the month of art and fun, “Main Street: A Fashion and Music Experience” will transform the Eccles lobby into an immersive experience on July 13 from 8 to 10 p.m. The following weekend on July 19 from 6 to 10 p.m., the Eccles Theatre, The Blocks and the Mexican Consulate of Salt Lake City presents four local mariachi bands and renowned Mexican classical guitarist Sergio Fuentes Oseguera.

In addition to invigorating local businesses and celebrating our Downtown community, Open Streets has served as a demonstration of what a permanent pedestrian-only Main Street could look like in the coming years. In 2023, the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City announced it was interested in the concept of a vehicle-free Main Street shopping district. While the plan is still in its earliest stage, the success of Open Streets has proven the possibilities of a people-over-cars mentality. “Main Street and downtown are at their best when people are prioritized over cars. The programming we have planned will surprise and delight everyone who comes downtown for the fun,” said Dee Brewer, executive director of the Downtown Alliance. “We are grateful for the City’s commitment to this demonstration project and their study of permanent improvements to Main Street to enable more public space and programming on this historic Corridor.”

Citizens Cocktails & Kitchen joins the Avenues’ culinary community

By After Dark, Eat & Drink

Salt Lake’s bright-eyed bar community has long outgrown the boundaries of Downtown, and now some of the most sought-after bars have found homes in the Central Ninth district and Sugarhouse neighborhood. Joining the roster of elevated cocktail lounges in SLC, Citizens Cocktails and Kitchen is breaking new ground in the Avenues area, and providing its residents with a fresh and modern sipping experience.

Opened in October of 2023, Citizens is the brainchild of Bryan Wrigley, CEO of Lotus Hospitality, who enlisted the help of long-time industry professionals Dave Morris and Jason Stucki to bring his vision to fruition. Their goal was to create a laid-back space where guests could spark conversation with knowledgeable bartenders, or simply sit back with a local brew and enjoy the skyline views on the patio. “We want everyone to feel included at Citizens, and consider it a true third place,” says general manager Casey Bright. The space exudes a sort of neighborly warmth, but the interiors are still filled with thoughtful decor and upscale character—as ensured by interior designer Michael Hennessy. Imported Indian marble, reclaimed Burmese teak wood and a swath of mid-century details add to Citizen’s overall trendy but timeless vibe.

The arrival of Citizens also marks a new era for the Capitol Hill/Avenues community, who typically must venture South in search of their nightcaps. In the six months since they’ve been open, the bar has already gotten a lot of feedback from imbibers who are happy to find a place serving up quality cocktails in the Avenues. “We really wanted to enhance that area of Salt Lake,” Morris says, referring to the neighborhood that houses culinary powerhouses like Oquirrh, Current and Gourmandise. Now, the area has an approachable cocktail bar serving up house-made creations from their bartenders and plenty of booze-forward classics.

Citizen’s extensive cocktail menu focuses on local ingredients and seasonal flavors, while catering to a wide variety of tastes. A house-favorite, the Ponderosa features a spirited mix of Gin, Genepy and Vermouth, rounded out by rosemary thyme syrup and lime juice. Other favorites include the Citizens Old Fashion and Lavender Espresso Martini. I expect the ‘Cool Kids Spicy Margarita’ to gain favor this summer, which puts a spin on the classic marg with hot honey, cucumber and jalapeno. Citizens also offers an assortment of shareables and Pinsa’s (Roman-style flatbread), including a roasted beet salad, whipped brie and a charcuterie platter. The menu is expected to fluctuate with the seasons, and for the summer Citizens is also serving brunch on the weekend from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

While Citizens might be one of few in the Avenues area, they have put in the effort to be a part of the larger bar scene here in Salt Lake. In late 2023, Citizens hosted their first pop-up in collaboration with Caviar Club, a vinyl listening party, and local Chef Manny L. Acero, which featured Latin dishes and wine pairings from Libations. More recently Citizens welcomed Bitter Lovers, the amaro-loving bartender Jordan Strang and food wizard Jozef Ezra. “We love pop-ups because of how many different groups they bring together,” marketing manager Cameron Egan says. “We’ll try and host them at least once a month.”

Keep an eye out for the next pop-up or event at Citizens by following them on Instagram @slcitizens, and stop by for all the summer patio vibes!

Local Artist Sticker Machine Makes it Fun and Easy to Collect Local Art

By Arts & Culture

There’s a nearly universal childhood experience of being dragged along for mundane adult errands, struggling to keep your hands to yourself in the grocery store cart, or counting the minute hand at the laundromat. Just when your kid brain is about to explode from boredom, you spot a vending machine hidden in the corner. No, it’s not filled with sugar-laden sodas (Mom would just say “no” anyway), it’s a sticker machine offering a reprieve from this task-filled purgatory with the promise of mystery and excitement. Just a quarter away lies a shiny new toy, and once you get your sticky fingers on it, this day of tear-jerking monotony will all be worth it. That is, until your adolescent attention span moves on to something newer and shiner and the sticker becomes another forgotten piece of junk in the toy box.

Of course, sticker machines were wasted on us as kids. Adults on the other hand, given the opportunity, we’ll collect and cherish those invaluable little pieces of art and revel in the nostalgic joy they bring us. One such grown-up who hasn’t forgotten the magic of vending machines is Natalie Allsup-Edwards, artist and owner and operator of Local Artist Sticker Machine in Salt Lake City.

“I grew up around my parent’s toy store, and they instilled this concept of creative entrepreneurship in me,” says Natalie. Recalling a childlike fascination with sticker machines at her local gas station, she decided to experiment with an adult version filled with bite-sized art. Her first refurbished vending machine was placed in Alchemy Coffee Shop in 2015, now she maintains over 40. “It became obvious that people liked it, and it was an easy way to engage with the artistic community.” The machines are replenished monthly with a variety of new local artist’s stickers, displaying everything from iconic Salt Lake City landmarks, to traditional tattoo designs, to cats with various  whimsical headwear. You’ll stumble across her glitter-adorned machines in coffee shops, bars and art galleries—some of her favorites are located at Quarters, Urban Arts Gallery and Sunset Coffee.

As a medium, stickers serve as an inexpensive and approachable avenue for art collection. By incorporating the concept of random selection, Natalie has created a dedicated community of sticker collectors who visit machines month after month to see what piece of local art fate will deal them next. For Salt Lake artists, getting showcased in a Local Artist Sticker Machine is a substantial exposure opportunity, as Natalie includes websites and artist info above their sticker slot on every machine. To date, Local Sticker Machine has featured 150 individual artists and Natalie expects that number to grow as she adds more and more vending machines to her troupe.

Apart from stickers, Natalie is experimenting with vending other custom trinkets, like postcards, fortunes and poems. “Vending is just fun, and there’s lots of room both conceptually and physically for experimental stuff,” she says. And for those who still want to participate in sticker collecting without the run-around, Natalie offers a monthly sticker subscription that includes five or 10 pieces from that month’s selection.

You can find all Local Artist Sticker Machine locations and sign up for a monthly subscription at Natalie’s website localartiststickermachine.com, and follow her on Instagram for current updates @localartiststickermachine

OCA’s Artist Factory Program Highlights the Importance of Youth Arts Education

By Arts & Culture

As we’ve witnessed public education funding come under fire over the past decade, some of the first programs to be cut are arts—despite proven studies that show how impactful arts education is on children’s mental, social and physical well-being. Sensing the dearth of access to arts programs in public schools, the team at Ogden Contemporary Arts (OCA) are on a mission to bridge the gap between professional artists and Utah youth. Launched in 2022, OCA’s Artist Factory Program partners with community organizations to empower students with the teachers, facilities, and environment needed to develop their creativity.

‘This Class Was Really Fun!’

In the workshop, “Exploring the Use of Animals in Art: Merging Children’s Interest with Contemporary Artists,” from teaching artist Nancy Andruk Olson, students learn to develop their own signature style, like American artist Basquiat, by reading the children’s book Radiant Child. Then, using a drawing guide, students create their own customized dinosaur in oil pastel on black paper. As one student put it, “Nancy taught me to have fun and always work hard!

“Art gives kids an opportunity to think critically, to collaborate and show empathy,” says Venessa Castagnoli, OCA’s Executive Director. “Art can be professional-building, and it just creates good people.” To create more good people, and pay professional artists a fair wage, Castagnoli and OCA’s Program Coordinator Kasey Lou Lindley created the Artist Factory Program. “We bring in professional artists that are active in the arts community, and they create a curriculum focusing on their expertise.” Each teacher curates a unique lesson plan that aligns with their discipline. Past courses have included videography, sculpting, painting, performance art, digital media and more. Throughout the courses, which vary in frequency and length, students also learn about more broad artistic concepts. “The students are learning a wide range of art approaches and techniques, from basic skills to more complex themes of identity, social justice and environmentalism,” Lindley says.

In the workshop “The Way Out & The Way Back,” artists Joshua Graham and Douglas Tolman lead students on a guided walk to collect data for their projects.

Just two years after the program’s creation, the Artist Factory Program now partners with the Boys & Girls Club of Weber-Davis, Youth Impact, YCC Family Crisis Center, The Monarch, Utah Division of Arts & Museums, Utah Division of Multicultural Affairs and the Weber Valley Youth Center to offer classes at ten locations in Ogden and Roy. More than 30 local teaching artists have taught and empowered over 900 students, and the OCA team expects that number to grow in the coming year. To highlight their work with community partners, and celebrate the dedication of their educators and students, Castagnoli and Lindley curated OCA’s first biannual exhibit Transference, which ran from Feb. 1-14. Combining the works of both teachers and their pupils, the dynamic exhibit showcased a range of mediums from digital installations to 2D artwork. “The overarching theme is how the teachers are transferring their knowledge to their students through their experience,” Lindley says. “And we did want to show a wide range of mediums to show the community what is being taught and created.”

The show is the first in what OCA hopes is an ongoing showcase of their rotating teachers and pupils. Apart from raising awareness for the Artist Factory Program, Castagnoli hopes the experience will excite and encourage their students. “All the work is for sale, and a portion will go toward the artists, so the really exciting thing is that some of these kids could potentially sell their work in a professional gallery and get paid for it.”
