The only predictable thing about the Sundance Film Festival is that it can be unpredictable—especially when Mother Nature gets involved. And that can make dressing for the festival a challenge.
“Layers are everything—and each layer is its own look,” says A Line Boutique founder, Karmen Berentsen. With six stores across three states selling designer and luxury brand clothing and accessories—and offering stylists to curate the perfect look for shoppers—Berentsen has done her research on dressing for any element.
When thinking about your Sundance fit, she says start with shoes. “Find that practical lug sole or high boot and start there. Then look at what your outerwear options are,” she says. “Between those two, you have bookends.”
She encourages festivalgoers to channel a timeless, effortless look that embodies texture, warmth, and movement. “Quiet confidence,” she explains. “And you have to be comfortable.”
What does that mean? Berentsen shares some quick tips on how to dress for the fest so that, no matter how the days unfold, you’ll look and feel damn good.

Outerwear
“A strong coat is a must because you may never take it off. You cannot have a fabulous outfit and just put on a coat from REI. Think shearling, fur, faux fur, or real furs that are made in a sustainable way. Your strong coat is your first look. You can have another look [underneath it], but you have to hit the first mark—and that is your coat.”
Warm Textures
“Texture is the trend right now. I just love texture. With sweaters, you can have lots of textures from the stitching to mixed fabrics to the really luxe cashmere. I just did this post on a Barrie sweater that we carry that is the finest cashmere in the world. It’s cashmere from Scotland, and this sweater has the flower woven in instead of being printed on. So it has this richness and character to it.

Hands-Free Confidence
“Sundance is one of those things where a lot of times you are going to want your hands in your pockets, even if you have gloves on. So think crossbodies or a small backpack.”
Footwear
“Footwear makes or breaks it. The lug sole is very in right now. It’s like a work boot, and they are extremely comfortable. You’ve got to think practical, but it can still be a statement. I also love a good thigh-high boot. During the day, you can put anything in a high boot, [like] leather leggings or tight jeans. For the evening, you could do a high boot with a dress or tights and a long trench.”

Oversize Look
“Relaxed tailoring (think oversized trench coats and blazers) is nice because it’s polished without stiffness.”
Evenings at Sundance
“I wouldn’t try too hard. [You] want a good, well-cut piece that you look fabulous in and you feel fabulous in, versus doing the loud, flashy dramatic. Definitely hose: from colored hose or tights to printed.”
