Top 3 Drive-In Theater Spots in Utah

By Adventures

Movies are kind of a thing here in Utah but with all the mega plush movie theaters we think not enough drive-in theaters are getting the proper attention they deserve. Here’s three of the best from around the state.

Redwood Drive-in Theater

drive-in theater

This outdoor theater has been showing movies since 1948! Since then they’ve made a bunch of changes including a state of the art projector system. Broadcasting a movie through their powerful FM system makes movies feel more real than ever. So, grab the kids and load up the suburban. Located in West Valley City additional details can be found on their website.

Erda Drive-in Theater

drive-in theater
Motor Vu

Formerly known as Motor Vu Theater, Erda Drive-in started in 1947 and has been a staple in the Salt Lake Valley for generations. The theater features four screens and a digital projection system that will bring every movie to life. Not literally, but you know what we mean. One of our favorite things about this drive-in is their snack bar. Instead of having to pay $5.50 for a large coke, prices at the snack bar are much more reasonable and wallet friendly. What Megaplex or Cinemark serves dill pickles, custom energy drinks and four cotton candy flavors? All these and more can be found at the snack bar. Erda movie theater is located in Tooele and additional information can be found on their website.

Shooting Star Drive-in

Down in Utah’s Red Rock Country, near the Grand Staircase-Escalante Monument, which is awesome and you should totally go there, you’ll find Shooting Star RV Resort in Escalante. The resort has a Drive-in theater with a fleet of classic ’60s cars to watch an outdoor movie. We thought this was pretty cool and definitely worth checking out. Movies are shown on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Check out their website to find out more.

Movies in the Park

Whether you don’t have any sweet wheels, or your Prius just isn’t suited for comfortably sitting through all three hours of Oppenheimer, you can still watch films in the great outdoors. Check out these movies in the park hosted select days throughout the summer:

Movie Magic in the Mountains

Enjoy the sweet summer breeze and stunning mountain views at Solitude Mountain Resort. The ski resort screens free classic films on their Moonbeam Lawn every Thursday now through Aug. 31. View the whole schedule, and don’t forget a lawn chair and a blanket!

Friday Fun Nights

Riverton City hosts Friday Fun Nights all summer, which include food trucks, local vendor booths, live music and free outdoor movie screenings. Movies begin at dusk, weather permitting.

4 Scariest Ghost Towns in Utah

By Utah Lore

If you’re planning a spooky road trip, how about trying something a little different? Here’s a list of some of Utah’s scariest Ghost Towns.

1. Sego, Utah

Once a booming coal town and now a lonely ghost town. The discovery of coal brought this small town to prominence. Natural resources couldn’t keep up with its growth and the shortage of water became a constant problem. Mines kept experiencing power outages and one after the other, miners left to test their luck elsewhere. Despite a majority of miners leaving, a small group decided to stay behind. With all odds against them, they brought back to life the once thriving mining town. Everything seemed to be in their favor until the town caught fire twice. All that’s left: a big red rock building and coal fires that still burn within the mining shafts.

2. 9 Mile Canyon

This ghost town is located in Price, Utah, which is approximately two hours away from Salt Lake City. It has been described as “the world’s longest art gallery.” 9 Mile Canyon offers a variety of recreational activities ranging from hiking, biking and picnicking. In addition, visitors can spend time viewing the prehistoric drawings lining the walls of the canyon. Overall, 9 Mile has plenty of history and recreation to offer if you’re willing to make the trip this summer.

3. Thistle Ghost Town

Established in 1883, Thistle was once a thriving farming community. In April 1983, a massive landslide hit the town, forcing its residents to evacuate. Currently labeled as one of the costliest landslides in U.S. history. Visitors traveling from along Route 89 can still see houses popping up out of the water.

4. Home of Truth

After the death of her husband Marie Ogden started The Truth Center out in New Jersey. Eventually, she and her followers relocated to Dry Valley, Utah. Three groups of buildings made up the compound. The innermost building housed Ogden and her divine typewriter which she claimed received revelations from heaven. Things really turned a wrong corner when one of Ogden’s followers, Edith Peshak, died of cancer. Eventually, people found out that Ogden had one of her followers burn the body while telling the rest of the group that she would come back to life. Consequently, many of her followers left and Ogden eventually passed away. The three buildings are still intact and visitors can still see the Inner Portal building, which housed Ogden. Home of Truth is located near Monticello, Utah, which is roughly five hours from Salt Lake City.

FanX: Charity Cosplay Groups Make Wishes Come True

By Arts & Culture

The fall 2019 edition of FanX brought out much of the same excitement as last spring’s. Lines and lines of nerds (are we still feeling like nerds? Or just the smart people?) assembled to see what Utah’s most anticipated pop culture/sci-fi/fantasy convention had in store. From Tom Holland (Spider-man: Far From Home) as a featured celebrity to the cosplay rising to another level, there was a lot to unpack. While the event was put together to help make fan dreams come true, Star Wars charity cosplay groups at the event were on hand to make wishes come true.

Five local charity cosplay organizations gathered to raise $5,000 for Make a Wish.

The 501st Legion, Rebel Legion, Droid Builders, Saber Guild and The Mandalorian Mercs combined to form one massive block in the convention hall. Each of these clubs represents a larger international organization with chapters everywhere, including Utah.

The Droid Builders build custom droids and remotely operate them. Massive crowds gathered around to see the droids in action. A miniature R2D2 and BB-8 rolled out and stole everyone’s heart.

The Madalorian Mercs formed a massive circle that gained the attention of many onlookers. More and more people made their way towards the Mandalorians, as they chanted and marched throughout the entire convention center. This tradition is referred to as the Mandalorian Death March. They do this at every convention, and it is quite the spectacle.

From the costumes to the choreographed death march, these groups really care about what they are doing. At the end of the day, each group was motivated to bring happiness into someone’s life through their costumes and live performances.

You can support their goal of raising $5,000 to make someone’s wish come true by making your own donation. Please show some support for these local groups. They love what they do and are way fun to see live!

Spring FanX 2019: Nerds Assemble

By Arts & Culture

Another FanX in the books, and this year’s spring event left many fans, including myself, very satisfied. The event was supposed to be the “smaller” of the two Fan-X events but it definitely didn’t feel that way.

Walking up to the event, I could see the same level of dedication that I witnessed at last fall’s event. Nerds from everywhere gathered together with some impressive costumes. As I walked through the doors,  I could hear the lyrics to Backstreet Boys’, “I Want It That Way.” It turns out that someone had the idea of having an impromptu karaoke sesh with most of the songs being a throwback to the Backstreet Boys. I mean what’s not to like?

The theme of this year’s event seemed to revolve around the fans again. Go figure. The setup was pretty much the same as last year, with the exception of the Evermore booth not being there. I was able to make my over to the PlayStation booth which had a pretty decent line to get in there. The booth was one of the new installments for last year’s event and was pretty successful. This year was no different. A couple of new games were available to play like Days Gone, a zombie thriller, and Mortal Kombat 11, the popular fighting game that’s been around since 1992. They were also handing out some coupons for discounts on items in the PlayStation Store. Free merch is always a bonus when coming out to a gathering like this.

This year had no shortage of stars bringing out names like, Asher Angel (Shazam), John Cleese (Monty Python), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Tom Felton (Harry Potter series), Seth Gilliam (The Walking Dead), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and many more. One of the amazing features about this convention is bringing out stars like this to do meet and greets, pictures, autographs etc. The fans are the focus. I happened to run by one of my heroes, Brian Baumgartner (Kevin from The Office) and it made my weekend.

Overall, FanX has done it again. They managed to put together an incredible event that made the fans the focus. There were questions and maybe there still are about the rebranding of the event and how it would affect future conventions. After attending the last two events, I think they’ve done something amazing in managing to bring out an insane amount of fans and making it all about them. Thank-you FanX! Until next time.

4 Places To Be This St. Patrick’s Day

By Arts & Culture

Get your corned beef and cabbage ready, because St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner and so are the many celebrations that have turned this holiday into a classic American tradition. One of the very first St. Patrick’s Day celebrations happened in Boston over three centuries ago in 1737. Since then, the holiday has been celebrated primarily as a secular holiday here in the United States. We get excited here for St. Patricks because it signals that we are close to Spring and Winter is pretty much over! Here are 4 things happening in the Salt Lake area for St. Patrick’s Day.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The Hibernian Society of Utah will be hosting their 41st annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, March 16th at 10AM. Rain or shine, we’re hoping for shine, the parade will go on. Make sure to wear your best green outfit, and if you don’t have a green outfit grab a shamrock button, and if you don’t have that we don’t know what to tell you. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come out and celebrate at this years parade.

St. Cody’s Magical Pub Crawl

The holiday wouldn’t be complete with out a proper pub crawl and Beehive Sports and Social Club is here to save the day. Similar to last year, they will be hosting a bar scavenger hunt. You will have to do your best to find all of the clues while enjoying drinks along the scavenger route. So, assemble your squad and get ready for a day full of drink, clues, stumbling, and great memories with friends. RSVP today.

4th West Fest

Mountain West Hard Cider will be there after the parade is over to keep the fun going and to keep everyone hydrated (beer, cider, and whisky). Local vendors and live music will be providing food and entertainment that will keep the celebrations going throughout the day. The legendary triple distilled Irish whiskey, Tullamore Dew, will also make a special appearance so you won’t want to miss this after-party. Visit their event page for more information.

Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum

This year you can celebrate St. Patrick’s day traditions at the Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum. Make sure to wear your favorite green outfit and celebrate all things St. Patty’s. Some of the activities include origami joke tellers, leprechaun beards, hats, rainbow binoculars, and more. Visit Discovery Gateway for more information.

11 Ways to Slay Valentine’s Day 2K19

By Arts & Culture

The shortest month of the year is finally here and so is that one day out of the year where cheesy love cards, heart-shaped candies, and cuddly teddy bears are trending (as well as guilt, anxiety and pressure NOT TO SCREW IT UP.) Yep. Valentine’s Day has finally come and if you better NOT SCREW IT UP. So. Salt Lake Magazine is here to take the stress out of the Valentine’s Day 2K19. You may also want to update your Xanax prescription.

Yoga and Beer at The Gateway

Yoga and Beer. While the idea of doing a down dog with a belly full of suds seems like a surefire way to give you acid reflux, this is actually a thing. The Gateway on February 13 will be celebrating this Valentine’s Day with a free yoga class for lovers and afterwards will have drinks for just $5 after you get your namaste on. All levels of yogis and beer drinkers are welcome. Mat rentals are $2. RSVP today!

After a champagne intermezzo, enjoy a choice of grilled swordfish, rack of lamb or New York steak, followed by passion fruit mousse for dessert. The best part about this entire meal is the price at $69 per per person. We see what you did there. Powder.

Grub Steak House

We couldn’t do a post without mentioning a proper steakhouse in Park City. Grub Steak Restaurant will be serving a prix-fixe for two that is sure to impress. Start with a choice of baby romaine Caesar salad, wild rice and mushroom soup, or Grub Steak’s famed salad bar, followed by coffee-rubbed New York steak with crème fraiche. Tin Angel

If you are just wanting to stay within Salt Lake, Tin Angel will be doing a “blind” dinner where one of the four courses is tasted while blindfolded. The owners have a passion for quality, local ingredients and offering high end cuisine, wine, and cocktails. For more information visit them on their website. UPDATE: V-Day is sold out. See you are totally blowing it. BUT you might could make a make-good. The blind dinners run through the weekend. It’s going to be OK.

There are slides built into the ice, winter princesses (like your lady!) strolling through and light and fire shows at night.

Finally learn to dance dude

valentine's dayDF Dance Studio is hosting a dance night on Valentine’s Day. Absolutely no experience is required and lots of fun guaranteed. It says so on their website. Instructors will be on hand to help you sort out those two left feet. And maybe they can talk you into actually signing up for lessons.
