I’ve always been a bit of a fish and chips snob; if a place nailed this dish, they had my heart. But after gorging on too many subpar servings, I took a break. My gold standard has been a cozy spot in Astoria, Oregon, but let’s be real—flying for two hours plus driving another two for fish and chips isn’t always feasible. So, I decided it was high time to see what Utah’s got to offer.
FishOn Bistro is a little gem tucked away in a cozy little strip off 9th East and Van Winkle. It’s the kind of place where the fish and chips feel a step above because it’s all they do. Options are the traditional Cod, or Salmon, both beautifully cooked; the batter, while nicely crispy, is just a touch greasier than I like, but really, they nail the cook on the fish. There was nothing special about the tartar sauce, but it had just enough tang to bring the whole dish together. It’s paired with chunky, perfectly fried chips that hit the spot every time. Get a side of clam chowder while you’re at it. It definitely adds to the meal.

At Summerhays Halibut N Chips, it’s all about keeping it fresh and simple. The fish, Halibut or Haddock, is crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and just greasy enough to remind you why you fell in love with fish and chips in the first place. I got the haddock, which feels a little meatier than the halibut, and I was thoroughly pleased. Although, I hear the halibut is much more popular. The place has a no-frills, friendly vibe. And the coleslaw with the perfectly tangy mustard vinaigrette (customers either love it or hate it; I loved it) completes the dish. The steak fries could use just another minute in the fryer to add a little more crisp, but otherwise, I was very happy. This may become my go-to here in the valley.

Mixing old-school charm with a dash of quirk, Annex Burger/No Name Saloon is where fish and chips come with a side of personality. Their take includes perfectly crispy fries and their lovely buffalo chips and salsa, which may have been the highlight of my visit. Maybe it was just a bad night, but the cook on the fish was inconsistent from one piece to the next, with one being nailed and the next being dry and overcooked. But all of this is served up in an atmosphere that’s as flavorful as the food. We had other dishes that night that won, but that’s another story. Grab a local brew to wash it all down—it’s the perfect pairing.

Roadhouse Grill is your go-to for a taste of Americana mixed with that classic British staple. They dish out fish and chips where they nail the cook on the fish, perfectly flaky and moist, with a beautifully crispy fried beer batter. The fries needed an extra dash of salt, but they went nicely with the fully flavored tartar sauce that really tied it all together. It’s laid-back, friendly, and feels like exactly where you want to be on a Friday night.

Modern vibes meet classic fare at The Black Sheep Bar and Grill, where the fish and chips get a bit of a gourmet twist. They serve up a nicely crispy battered fish. I’d like a meatier fish, but the batter is solid, not too greasy, and they serve it with a killer Jalapeño tartar sauce, which, for that alone, I’d go back. It’s a little out of the ordinary in the best way possible. The place buzzes with energy, making it a great spot to kick back and enjoy a meal that’s familiar yet fresh.
