American heart association teams up to tackle utah’s $3M school lunch debt

A healthy heart needs a nutritious diet, especially at a young age. That’s why the American Heart Association in Utah has partnered with Utahns Against Hunger and the School Nutrition Association of Utah to work on Healthy School Meals for All to help all children get a good lunch at school.

This is especially important in underserved communities where parents might not be able to afford school lunches. According to Utahns Against Hunger (UAH) and the School Nutrition Association of Utah (SNAU), the current student lunch school debt now exceeds $3 million.

To the American Heart Association in Utah, getting involved in this cause can have a rippling effect on an entire generation’s health and well-being. It establishes a foundation for lifelong health, helping reduce the risks of obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Nutritious school meals are essential in promoting and supporting both physical and cognitive development. 

“All children deserve access to healthy school meals,” says Noah Miterko, Government Relations Director, American Heart Association in Utah. “Let’s make sure schools can provide them with all the tools they need to be successful in class.”

A healthy lunch can make a world of difference for a young student. Making nutritious meals available to all students, particularly in underserved areas, improves academic performance and mental well-being while addressing health disparities across socioeconomic differences.

Working on Healthy School Meals for All, the Association joins UAH and SNAU to reduce school meal debt and foster healthier, more resilient communities all over the state, particularly where it’s needed the most.

It’s a cause with heart, fitting for the American Heart Association in Utah.

America first charitable foundation: bringing hope to families in need

“People helping people.”

That core philosophy drives America First Credit Union’s mantra toward its members and employees. The credit union’s philanthropic arm, the America First Charitable Foundation, is much the same way.

Built upon four core pillars; Community First, Kids First, Education First and Service First, the America First Charitable Foundation delivers on its mission in meaningful ways. Donating diapers to disadvantaged families, providing weekend meal kits for children, distributing coats and shoes to kids in need and offering support to shelters and food banks through an annual food drive.

The goal is simple: to ensure that no one is left without the basics to survive. The America First Charitable Foundation brings hope to families that may be struggling within the community.

“Our foundation has provided hope and support to countless individuals, and we remain dedicated to continuing this meaningful change,” says Amber Greenwell, America First’s Charitable Foundation and Community Outreach Director. “Empowering positive change by providing essential resources to those in need will always be a top priority for us.”

Thousands of local families have experienced the impact of “people helping people,” through the America First Charitable Foundation, thanks to a shared commitment by America First Credit Union and its many long-standing partnerships with like-minded local organizations.

“Building strong communities is done by ensuring everyone has access to basic human needs, such as food, clothing, shelter and education and the belief that no child should ever go hungry,” Greenwell says. “‘People helping people’ is a direct representation of who our members and employees are.”

‘Find your passion’ says the local head of philanthropy at shriners children’s slc. 

Kristin Lehman Bingham recently assumed the role of Senior Director of Philanthropy at Shiners Children’s in Salt Lake City. To her, the job is a “terrific match” for her skillset and passions. Formerly working for the March of Dimes and the Alzheimer’s Association, Bingham credits her mother with laying the foundation for her career of giving back to others.

 Where did your passion come from?

“My mom was very philanthropic and set a great example for me getting behind worthwhile causes,” Bingham says. “She passed away while I was in college, and I have dedicated my career in her honor.”

How did you discover shriners’ mission?

Growing up, the Shriners fraternity and Shriners Children’s services were vital to many in Bingham’s circle of friends and family. As the Salt Lake City location nears its 100th anniversary, she sees it as a time to celebrate the incredible legacy these institutions have built in our community. “It is very humbling to be a part of an organization that is so deeply integrated into the fabric of our community, and it motivates me to continually strive for ways to strengthen these bonds, expand our reach, and ensure that Shriners Children’s Salt Lake City remains a pillar of hope and healing for generations to come,” Bingham says.

Tell us about your vision.

Her vision as the Senior Director of Philanthropy is simple: get active in the community, particularly with those who share a hope of providing amazing care to children regardless of their family’s ability to pay. “I envision deepening our community engagement efforts to raise awareness and funds that directly benefit our patients. This includes allowing everyone to support us in a way that is meaningful to them,” Bingham says.

What is next for shriners children’s slc?

With her new role, Bingham hopes to serve as a mentor for the next generation of leaders. “Serving as a role model is a way to pay forward the support and mentorship I have received from other women in my career,” she says. “I have had several wonderful mentors along the way for whom I’m forever grateful.” Her advice to women embarking on a business career: build your network, identify what you care most about, and center your work around it. “Find those causes that truly resonate with you,” Bingham says. “You will always do more and be more fulfilled if you are truly passionate about something.”

 AAA encourages all caregivers to have car seats inspected by certified car seat technicians

As parents and caregivers, we all want to protect our children. However, even with the best intentions, car seat safety can often be overlooked. 

According to the National Digital Car Seat Check database, only one in four car seats are correctly installed. This statistic aligns with the findings from a consumer survey done by AAA Utah and the National Safety Council, that revealed only one in five caretakers seek expert help for car seat installation, something AAA offers at no charge, by way of certified employee technicians at many of their local offices.

Top Car Seat Mistakes to Avoid

Safety experts have identified three common mistakes to avoid: 

1. The Wiggle Test. If your car seat moves around too much, it’s probably not installed securely. A properly installed seat should remain stable with minimal movement when tested. A loose seat may fail to protect a child during a collision.
2. The Overlooked Strap. For forward-facing seats, an additional strap, known as the tether, is crucial. The tether prevents the seat from tilting forward in a crash, which significantly reduces the risk of head and neck injuries. Unfortunately, many caregivers forget to use it.
3. The Pinch Check. When securing your child in the seat, ensure the harness straps are snug. A good rule of thumb? Use your thumb! A simple way to test this is by trying to pinch the strap material at armpit level. If you can pinch any excess, the strap is too loose. If you can’t it’s likely tight enough.

The fact that you bought a car seat means you want the best for the child you care for. Making sure it’s installed correctly can help you reach that goal. 120,000 children were injured in car crashes in 2022, a properly installed car seat is essential to keeping kids safe.

Choosing the Right Seat for Your Child’s Age

Another common issue is transitioning children to different car seat types prematurely. Research shows that 25 percent of children are placed in booster seats too early, and 90 percent of kids using a regular (lap and shoulder) seat belt would be better protected in a booster seat or forward-facing car seat.

Boosting Your Car Seat Knowledge

To further educate parents and caregivers, free resources like the “Car Seat Basics” online course is available. The comprehensive program, developed by the National Safety Council in collaboration with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, covers every stage of child passenger safety, from rear-facing seats to the transition to seat belts.
Ensuring your child is in the right seat and that it’s installed correctly is critical to their safety on the road. Taking the time to double-check your car seat setup could make a lifesaving difference.
