Women in Business: Angela H. Brown

By From Our Partners

Angela H. Brown realized that she had magic on her hands back when SLUG Magazine launched the first Craft Lake City DIY Festival, 12 years ago. Since then Craft Lake City has become a separate organization, a non-profit that supports artists, creatives, and makers with its signature festival and with events and educational resources year-round. This year, however, the Craft Lake City team had to dig deep to keep that magic going.

“Last April, all the big major national events were canceling and we had to make a hard decision about our August festival,” she says. “It takes all year to plan Craft Lake City and if we got to August and had to cancel, that would be the end of us. We knew we had to come up with another way.”

That way, in signature AHB style, was to think big. Really big. Last August, Craft Lake City launched its first-ever Virtual DIY Festival and designed an entire virtual reality platform to make it happen.

“Lots of festivals were going to basic sort of shopping websites,” she says. “But our team dreams large. We had no idea how we were going to do it at first but we were able to build a 3D virtual reality experience that allowed guests to interact directly with our vendors live during the event. It was amazing.”

During the event, which was offered free from Aug. 7-9, each artist designed their own virtual gallery and was “present” in their space through a virtual avatar. Patrons could create their own avatars and stroll through the event space, stopping into the various galleries and viewing the wares.

Angela says she’s taken the pandemic as an opportunity to find new ways to help creatives share their art. In addition to the new model for the DIY Festival, Craft Lake City has opened its Craft Lake City Academy, a series of courses that teach artists how to do the business side of their work.

“They don’t teach business in art school,” she says. “But if you are an artist you are also a business owner. We want to help these creators be successful.” Craft Lake City, in partnership with Google Fiber, also created a series of STEM DIY projects that educators can use in their online classrooms for free, and are also available for parents. These projects focus on Title 1 school kids and are designed around supplies that don’t need to be bought or cost very little, she says. “I’ve always wanted to be a part of making SLC the city where I want to live,” she says. “After 20 years of publishing SLUG magazine and 12 years of building Craft Lake City, I am proud to see so much positive change in our community and I’m not slowing down!”

Women in Business: Suzi Sands

By From Our Partners

From her own personal experience seeking a place to address intimate concerns, Suzi Sands, Founder and CEO of Aviva Woman, felt there was a gap in women’s health. She found that conventional medical clinics lack the skills and the time to take on many vital and common feminine health issues like libido, sexual function, hormone imbalance and low energy, and don’t provide a comfortable setting that allows women to talk freely and openly about such concerns.

Suzi’s background includes a degree in biology—she was later drawn to esthetics and was part of the opening team to develop the Montage Deer Valley Resort Spa. After that experience, Suzi was inspired to create her own specialized center, Aviva Woman—a place for women to comfortably address intimate concerns in the warmth of a Forbes star spa with the clinical treatments of health care services. To put guests at ease during the initial assessment, they take a less formal, more soothing approach, as Suzi says, “We wish to create a 5-star experience from start to finish, setting the tone and putting our guests at ease so that they can openly discuss with us various options.”

“It’s more than just about your cosmetic appearance. We make sure that couples and women are comfortable talking about desire and the healthy romantic relationship that is essential for intimacy,” Suzi says, “We listen and create a path to treatment that may include a variety of options from intimate care procedures such as ThermiVa to bio-identical hormone therapy.” Aviva Woman also includes med-spa services such as facials and cosmetic injections with the goal of aging gracefully and naturally whether it be by using Botox or Radio Frequency to address fine lines and wrinkles.

As an exciting addition, Aviva Woman now offers IV infusions like Glutathione, a super powerful antioxidant that can help support a strong immune response, and
ties into improving energy levels, helping you to feel your healthiest and best. Suzi says, “As a free radical scavenger, Glutathione aids in keeping the skin and hair healthy, promoting a better night’s sleep, and reviving energy so we have the time and desire to keep our relationships strong.”

Lindsay Breinholt: Utah Faces and Places

By From Our Partners

SkinSpirit master practitioner Lindsay Brienholt has built a career in supporting women. As a licensed Nurse Practitioner, in her early career she worked as a midwife and women’s health expert. Over time, she has grown with her clients and prides herself on seeing the “whole woman”. “My clients are healthy, they exercise, they eat well, and they take care of their families,” she says. “It’s hard when they see their reflection in the mirror to not see the way they feel inside. My job is to support them and to support their natural beauty” Contrary to outdated stereotypes about plastic surgery, the treatments offered at SkinSpirit are designed, tested and carefully administered to bolster and support women. The goal, Breinholt says, is to enhance and not to replace. “Our clients don’t want that ‘done look’ so we work closely with them, overtime to ensure that our treatments are not replacing something that isn’t there,” she says.

“We want to support our clients’ natural beauty and spirit.” “It’s about vulnerability and understanding a client’s self-connection,” Breinholt says. “I have to earn their trust,” she says. “We’re supporting them through life changes and we share a lot together. We don’t make sales pitches, we’re not trying to sell them on the latest thing, it’s all about doing the right thing for our client, educating and giving the right advice, products and treatments. This is a long-term relationship we work to earn loyalty and trust.” For Breinholt, breaking down stereotypes and showing clients how they can be their best selves. “I get that you think addressing worries about your appearance is hard,” she says. “But the cool thing about injectables is that this is a non-surgical option. This isn’t a celebrity treatment, it’s as accessible as getting your nails done or your hair cut and colored. I take nonbelievers and show them. My motto is “no one should know I exist, I’m here to take care of you.”

A lifelong Utahan, Breinholt understands this community. “We have such a beautiful state and that reflects in the people who chose to live here, even those who didn’t grow up here. I call it ‘Utah organic’ and it’s a feeling as much as an outward appearance and we want to share that with our clients.” SkinSpirit is the No. 1 Botox and dermal filler provider in the country, with a comprehensive menu of award-winning skin and body treatments. Established in 2003, the company continues to grow and thrive in California, Washington, Texas, and now, Utah. SkinSpirit clients experience the highest level of expert care and safety standards at its newest clinic in Sugar House—a unique and luxurious medical spa providing tested and trusted treatments to bring desired results. Candice Itokazu: Utah Faces and Places

By From Our Partners

At Lucienne Salon Spa Boutique, they like to keep it in the family. Candice Itokazu is the general manager of both locations Lucienne, named after her grandmother, was started by her mother and father Sheila and John in 2016. Initially, Lucienne was a full-service hair salon that developed a loyal following. “I had been a styling hair for 17 years,” Candice says. “When the family started Lucienne we set out to be a salon, first and foremost, and build a community for our clients.” In the time since the family started exploring other services and responding to client’s requests for additional offerings.

Now a full-service salon, spa, med, spa and boutique, Lucienne offers body contouring, laser hair removal, chemical peels, massage and injectables. But like the recommendations they give their clients, they moved slowly and carefully in expanding into med-spa offerings. “We didn’t wake up one day and say, ‘we’re a medspa’” Candice says laughing. “My mother really honed in on not only the services we wanted to add but the professionals who would provide those services.” For example, in a world of immediate gratification, Candice says sometimes the Lucienne approach isn’t for everyone. “When we advise our clients on any of these procedures we recommend a gradual, patient approach,” she says. “Our clients don’t want to look done or plastic and we won’t put our name on any service that goes against that. For some they want immediate gratification, to say, go blonde immediately. I’ll say, ‘well you can do that if you want to damage your hair but that’s not what we do here.’

It’s about integrity building trust and relationships for us. ”Candice and the team at Lucienne know that their clients aren’t there for “just a cut and color.” And during the tumultuous times we live in, she’s realized that the services they provide are essential. “We literally lay our hands on people and we know how important that basic human touch is to our clients,” she says. “It’s a basic human need. I can have someone come in who is having a terrible day, sit in my chair and leave with a smile on their face. There is a lot of satisfaction and gratification in that process.”

How to Bring Your Vintage Ring to the 21st Century

By From Our Partners

Vintage is the new black. More and more people getting down on one knee are choosing to present a vintage engagement ring to their soon-to-be-spouses. Vintage rings offer a glimpse into history and an elegance that is rarely matched in modern styles.

That said, vintage engagement rings are excellent options, but combining the old with the new can make for a hybrid ring that will stay in the family for generations to come!
Interested? Here’s everything you need to know about vintage engagement rings and how you can bring yours into the 21st century.

What to Know About Vintage Engagement Rings

It’s challenging to come up with a definition of vintage, especially when it comes to jewelry. As time passes and old styles become even older, more and more styles are added to the “vintage” category. However, the consensus is that anything older than 20 years can be considered vintage.

This isn’t to be confused with the term “antique” which generally refers to anything made at least a century ago. Vintage engagement ring styles typically span multiple decades and are considered style eras. We’re currently in the modern era with the most popular vintage eras ending over 70 years ago! Here’s a breakdown of the most popular eras:

● Victorian Era 1837-1901: The Victorian Era coincided with Queen Victoria’s rule of
England. Gold and silver paired with diamonds, pearls, and other jewels ruled the era.
Snakes were incorporated into many designs.
● Edwardian Era 1901-1915: This era didn’t last very long, but it’s known for bringing
platinum to the public eye. Ornate rings decorated with diamonds and pearls were
common.
● Art Nouveau 1890-1910: Intricate designs inspired by flowers and delicate lines
characterized this era. Art Nouveau Era rings generally feature free form designs with
little symmetry or limitations in materials.
● Art Deco Era 1920-1945: The Art Deco Era was inspired by a French architect, with
clean pieces, inspired by geometrical shapes, and symmetrical. Platinum bands and a
mix or jewels were common during this era.
● Retro Era 1939-1950: This era is characterized by bold designs with bigger and more
vibrant jewel tones. Yellow gold was used most commonly, but white gold and platinum
were also popular.

True Vintage vs. Lookalike Vintage Rings:

True vintage rings are generally harder to find and more costly than their lookalike counterparts. Vintage rings are also referred to as “heirloom” rings, as they are commonly passed down from generation to generation within families. As time passes, it becomes challenging to find true vintage rings, especially from older eras. That’s why many individuals choose lookalike rings modeled after the style of the era of their liking. It’s generally a cheaper option and easier to add a personal touch.

About Lab-grown Diamonds

One of the easiest ways to bring your vintage ring dreams to fruition is to utilize lab-grown diamonds. The combination of a vintage ring and a lab-grown diamond marries the beauty of the past with the future technologies. What’s more futuristic than a real diamond made in a lab?

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds that are completely identical to their mined counterparts. They’re less expensive and more environmentally friendly than mined diamonds. In short, they make the perfect complement to an older engagement ring, by injecting some 21st-century technology and glam.

Final Thoughts

Vintage engagement rings are perfect for any occasion. Their timeless beauty transcends
fashion trends and makes for the perfect unique piece for any proposal. Though choosing a
vintage engagement ring can be challenging, it’s certainly worth the outcome! Take your time, do some research, and consider melding the old and new with a vintage engagement ring and a lab-grown diamond.

Dave Truja: Utah Faces and Places

By From Our Partners

“I love this business,” says Dave Turja. Why? “Every day is different, every day has different challenges. You’re competing with yourself and you’re improving people’s quality of life.” Turja has been at Ken Garff’s Porsche-Audi dealership for eight years and in the car business since 1990 and he believes in the cars he sells and the company he works for. “I was a Porsche fan long before I started working here,” says Turja. “Ever since Risky Business. I already owned a Porsche.”

“Owning a Porsche or an Audi is a lifelong goal for a lot of people—we’re providing cars that are milestones in their lives. For many of our customers ars are an extension of who they are, like your house or your clothes or your pet. They’re viewed by many people as an indicator of who you are and what you’ve achieved.” Ken Garff is one of the top ten largest auto dealers in the country—55 locations in six states. “Yet,” says Turja, “you feel like you’re working in a small company. This is a family business and you feel like you’re part of the family. We see members of the family often. Robert Garff was the most sincere, caring down-to-earth person I’ve ever met. His company reflects that.

Our motto is ‘‘ Treat people R.I.G.H.T.’’ R.I.G.H.T. is an acronym for respect, integrity, growth, humility and teamwork. “The premise is that our employees bring that ideal to work,” says Turja. Every employee is part of the decision-making process. “The philosophy is, if we take care of our employees, then our employees take care of our customers.” Turja says the Garff organization extends its mantra into the community. “Every store did three different community projects after Covid first hit to help local businesses negatively impacted. We also partnered with the Lehi Ken Garff Land Rover dealership and helped build a basketball court and hoops for a youth facility here in Lehi.”

CBD: Discover Simple Techniques to Reduce Stress

By From Our Partners

Whether it is the state of the national economy, school system or politics, there is certainly enough to stress out anyone in Salt Lake City. All that emotional pressure can lead to sleepless nights, grumpiness and even heart attacks. Fortunately for men and women everywhere, there are easy, low-risk and inexpensive calming techniques, including CBD oil and meditation, to enjoy a peaceful frame of mind.

CBD tinctures are becoming more and more popular on the consumer market, and for
good reason. Not only are the best CBD oil tinctures extremely effective at managing
stress, they are completely legal throughout the United States. The top CBD tinctures
for sale are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream to help an individual relax. They are ideal for getting a precise amount of CBD into your system, whether you use a dropper
for your mouth or mixed into your coffee. There are even fun flavors, such as coconut and natural hemp. However you choose to ingest your CBD product, you’ll experience no trouble chilling out your mind and body. Remember, even the most potent CBD merchandise available only works on about 65% of users.

On top of enjoying the benefits of CBD oil, a person can always try to relax with
progressive muscle relaxation, also known as PMR. Introduced in the Thirties by an
American doctor named Edmond Jacobson, PMR entails going back and forth between
pressure and relaxation in one’s muscle groups. It all starts with a person’s breathing for
1 or 2 minutes. People then concentrate on putting tension into their toes and work their
way up through their legs, stomachs, chests and arms. It is certainly easier to relax a
body part after it has been physically strained for a couple of minutes. Feel free to
repeat the exercise for a more intense workout.

Another tip to staying calm and cool is meditation. While celebrities have helped it grow
into a trendy fad over the last few years, meditation is still wonderful for helping people
relax and stay focused on visualization or breathing. People should find a tranquil
setting and make themselves comfortable. Take deep breathes and stay conscience of
your inhaling and exhaling techniques. Doing so should help you unwind, both
physically and emotionally. Getting the most out of meditation takes a bit of practice.
Start slowly by designating 10 or 15 minutes to meditation every evening. Over time,
you can make your sessions longer and more intense.

To stay positive, it can be essential to think that way. Just because you practice positive
thinking does not make you a wishful dreamer or a hippie. It’s about finding the good in
any situation. In your head, you may want to visualize a hammock on a picturesque
beach. Maybe you are drinking a frozen margarita and jamming out to a reggae with
loved ones. Whatever you do, avoid negativity. That may mean steering clear of the news and social media outlets that can make your blood boil. Rather, listen to a little Bob Marley, enjoy a savory CBD edible and treat everyday as if it is a gift.
