For our September/October issue, we sought to capture the essence of third space camaraderie that resonates with so many of our readers. So, here are our 27 favorite watering holes in Utah stirring up more than something special in a glass. Comprising nationally-recognized cocktail bars that tease our curiosity and no-frills dives that answer the call for human companionship with a stiff pour and schooled benevolence — these are the places we feel represent the current state of nightlife in Salt Lake. Along the way we chatted with four star-tenders that are bringing something special to their establishment, ask asked them to present a seasonal cocktail our readers can sip and enjoy throughout September and October.

Star-Tender Alen Feukic, Post Office Place
Alen Feukic presents “a love letter to our state and its natural beauty, with a little influence from Post Office Place’s Japanese roots.” Inside is: rye whiskey, dill aquavit, sesame shochu, toasted rice syrup, lemon coconut oleo, and carrot juice.

Tell us about the drink, does it have a name?
“Cocktail name: Five Yūrei. The drinks story: A love letter to our state and its natural beauty, with a little influence from Post Office Place’s Japanese roots. An homage to our five gorgeous national parks in southern Utah, and to remind people what we could be at stake of changing or disappearing entirely. While our local government exploits water rights and ignores our ecological interests we inch closer and closer to loosing our beloved Lakes, Parks, and natural monuments.”
What’s inside?
“I’ve decided to use Sugarhouse rye for the base since it brings a nice earthy spice flavor with a little pepper and caramel notes I also really appreciate their grain to glass ethos. Reykjavik dill aquavit for a little herbal freshness. Beniotome sesame shochu to bring Post Office Place’s roots into play and add a nice nutty quality. Licor 43 brings a nice vanilla sweetness that pairs with the Sugarhouse Rye. Toasted rice syrup, lemon coconut oleo, citrus adjusted carrot juice”
What’s your favorite thing about tending bar?
“I think my favorite part about bartending is being able to bring a little bit of fun to people’s eating and drinking experiences. Telling jokes, sharing stories, and getting to know people in our Salt Lake Community.”
What’s your least favorite drink to make?
“Midori sour, you’re not gonna like it, I’m not gonna like it, it’s just gonna be a bad time for everyone.”
