Public Speaking Class

Did you know the number one fear of most Americans—greater even than the fear of death—is public speaking?

No wonder there's always a bit of nervousness when we are called upon to put our speaking skills to use for our schools, churches, or community/civic groups. In this class, you will explore the basics of how to create a great presentation, how to overcome anxiety, how to use non-verbal communication during your presentation, and how to build a good relationship with our audiences. And of course, you will practice, practice, practice—the only sure-fire way to become more confident with our presentations. No class April 28.

Biocontrol with Tamarisk Beetles of Moab by Wright Robinson

Free Lecture: Biocontrol with Tamarisk Beetles by Wright Robinson

Tamarisk was growing along the riparian areas in Grand County by the 1960’s. It is considered among the most destructive of Invasive plants since it rapidly excludes native vegetation, can dry up desert springs, alter water quality, and increase soil salinity all of which degrades wildlife habitat. Biological control of weeds, like the use of insects, has had an outstanding record of safely managing invasive weeds for more than 100 years. In 2004, beetles became available for movement within Utah and are showing themselves capable of assisting in the management of tamarisk.

Join us at the MIC to learn of the abundance, movements and impacts on tamarisk in Grand County, Utah from 2004 until 2014 and into the future.

Secrets of Screenwriting

Tuesdays, 04/15/14 - 05/06/14

Explosions, zombies, swords, sex scenes, three-minute monologues and femme fatales...these all mean nothing without the foundation of a great story. In this course, we will use a shooting script of a movie currently in theaters to biopsy the bones of visual storytelling. You'll learn how to "read" movies, build three dimensional heroes, up the stakes, create obstacles, employ reversals and be able to use The 9 Mythic Questions to birth the blockbuster in your head.

Wild & Scenic Film Festival Hosted by Summit Land Conservancy

Summit Land Conservancy has selected 13 environmental and adventure films ranging from two to 27 minutes in length for this year’s festival. From a story about a boy catching his first fish to a visual poem about the joy of air, from a recreation of a legendary 1906 expedition to a profile on a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, from a hilarious, tongue-in-cheek examination of the plastic bag problem to a visually stunning exploration of a river that has not kissed the ocean in years, these 13 films will inspire, educate and challenge you and, quite possibly, change your world.

Geology of the Wasatch

Monday and Wednesday, April 28–30, 6:30–9 p.m., Saturday, May 3, 9 a.m.–1 p.m.

The Front Range of the Wasatch forms one of the West's grand scenic backdrops, but what stories do the rocks have to tell?

And what clues do geologists use to unravel the mysteries of the Earth's distant past? We'll learn to recognize telltale signs of the origins of different rock layers and explore how the face of the Wasatch has changed dramatically through time. We'll see how glaciers, Lake Bonneville and the Wasatch fault have shaped the modern landscape. A half-day field trip along the foot of the mountains will provide an opportunity to get our hands on the rocks.
