Keys to Buying Your Home Right

Tuesdays, 03/04/14 - 04/15/14, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m., $199; Saturday, 04/12/14, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

A home is the biggest purchase most of us will ever make, and in real estate, you make money when you buy—not when you sell. Loving the house is not enough. How do you keep yourself from making a colossal mistake? Let's start by talking about what to look for in a home, how to evaluate its "Quality of Life" and its investment value. We'll discuss pitfalls and how to avoid them; finance options which best meet your needs; the hidden costs of buying; and "secret" ways to pay legitimate closing costs. We'll take you step-by-step through the buying process from preparation to closing, including how to package, present and negotiate your offer. A Saturday field trip to see houses provides real-world examples of our discussions.

Bee Keeping

Tuesdays, 03/04/14 - 03/18/14, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., $97 Saturday, 03/22/14, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.

Healthy, happy, easy-to-maintain honey bees not only reward their keepers with delicious honey, they provide a wonderful pollination service to neighborhood gardens. Learn how to select, house, and manage these beneficial insects as we look at hive components, costs, assembly and location; use of a smoker; what to wear when working with bees; when to purchase bees; and from whom; how to install bees into the hive; and how to keep your bees healthy. Along the way we'll discuss bee anatomy and social structure, and provide you with a month-by-month schedule of bee keeping activities.

During the final class, we'll pick up bees from a local supplier and install them in the instructor's hive. Special fee covers the text Starting Right with Bees.

Shelter Me: Second Chances

"Shelter Me: Second Chances," hosted by Edie Falco, is the third episode in the inspiring series about shelter pets improving people's lives.

Airing Salt Lake City, UEN-TV this Tuesday, you'll experience teenage inmates learning how to train shelter dogs as we go inside a juvenile detention facility. The results bring a message of hope and provide life-long lessons. You'll also see a poet deliver an emotional performance about the impact shelter animals have on our lives. And lastly, you'll watch a professional photographer take a group of students into a shelter and show how taking great pictures can help more animals get adopted.

Shelter Me is about helping others and making a difference, as we focus on the success stories that bring more people into the shelters to give these incredible animals a second chance. www.ShelterMe.tv

Exhibition at Finch Lane Gallery Explores Writing about Race

The Finch Lane Gallery, in conjunction with Salt Lake Community College Community Writing Center and the Utah Humanities Council, is hosting an exhibition that features writing in response to participants’ feelings about race. The exhibition, “Perspectives on Race: The Race Card Project,” runs March 14 through May 2. A Race Card Wall, where visitors can articulate their feelings about race in six words, accompanies the exhibition. Andrea Malouf, Director of the Community Writing Center, will speak about the project on Friday, March 14 at 7 p.m.

Perspectives on Race: The Race Card Project, based on Michele Norris’s online project, The Race Card Project, instigates candid dialogue about race, ethnicity and cultural identity. The writing in the exhibition is a response to the six-word sentence that has been expanded into six-hundred words (or more) as a poem, an essay or short story. Excerpts from the writing will be on view.

Contemporary Artist Annie Boyer Exhibits at Finch Lane Gallery

Her non-representational style is a result of mixing paint, water, air, and creativity. The exhibition will be on view at the Finch Lane Gallery March 14 through May 2, with an opening reception will be held on Friday, March 14 from 6–8 p.m. Boyer will talk about her work at 7:00 p.m. during the Salt Lake Gallery Stroll on April 18.

Barbara Ellard Ceramics on View at the Finch Lane Gallery

Ceramic artist Barbara Ellard combines wheel-thrown and hand-building techniques to create pieces that have mass and challenge the negative space around it in her exhibition “Fired: New Works in Clay,” on view at the Finch Lane Gallery March 14 through May 2. An opening reception will be held on Friday, March 14 from 6-8 p.m. After creating a wheel-thrown piece, Ellard often sculpts onto the surface of her work to enhance its full-bodied shape. “I am constantly concerned with the volume of the piece and the negative space it creates,” says Ellard. “I want to create a juxtaposition of fullness and constraint. So often my work has a ‘full bodied’ appearance with a small foot or opening at the top. Sculpting the surfaces of some of my work is a way to enhance that feeling of ‘fullness.’” Ellard responds intuitively to the surface of her pieces.

Complimentary Executive Briefing Presented by Sandler Training

Executive Briefing: Creating Disarming Honesty in Your Sales Approach!

In the typical interaction between a salesperson and prospect, the salesperson gives up control of the sales process within the first few minutes. This traditional selling approach leads to miscommunication, long drawn-out sales cycles, and pipelines that are filled with unqualified opportunities and massive dysfunction. The fact is, over 90 percent of businesses don’t have a sales process that is consistently followed from start to finish. The buyer has a system and it is designed to defeat the salesperson every time.

By taking a non-traditional approach, the Sandler Sales System allows the sales professional to be in control of the sales interaction and allows an organization to increase effectiveness and efficiency. This complimentary session is designed for executives, business owners, and serious sales professionals that want to raise the bar in their organizations.
