Portrait Drawing

Work with a live model and demystify the process of depicting a realistic likeness. Through careful observation, we'll focus on the fundamental mechanics of blocking in the head and face, using essential techniques and concepts of the picture plane, measuring, proportion, line, positive and negative space, value, volume, basic anatomy, and composition. We'll work primarily in charcoal, as well as in pastel and pencil if students wish, launching on an adventure that for many is a lifetime pursuit. To register or for more information, call 801-587-LIFE (5433) or visit lifelong.utah.edu.

Art of the Timepiece

In this unprecedented, gallery-wide exhibit, the Kimball Art Center will explore the history of our incessant journey to progressively master time, as well as the art and science of making and adorning timepieces.

Since the dawn of civilization, humans have created timekeeping devices of ever-increasing precision, which have had a profound impact on the framework of life and society. From the rudimentary, ancient Egyptian “shadow clocks” to the modern, ultra-accurate atomic clocks, this exhibition traces mankind’s unrelenting quest for excellence by creating instruments of staggering complexity and beauty – devices which marry both the disciplines of art and science.

For the first time ever, visitors will discover the expansive collection of Karol Renau’s extraordinary timepieces as well as his intimate photography of the hidden art within. Discover exceptional watches on loan from O.C. Tanner, as well as the timepiece-based jewelry of artists Krysia Renau and Stacy Sheers

She Loves Me at Babcock Theatre

Georg and Amalia are co-workers in a European perfumery. From the first day they meet, they drive each other crazy…and not in a good way. Both secretly find solace in their anonymous pen pals, little knowing their respective correspondents are none other than each other. She Loves Me is a romantic musical comedy that is universal and relevant as ever in this age of Internet romances with songs that are sweeter than ice-cream.

Recommended for patrons ages 8 and up. Children under four years of age, including babes in arms, will not be admitted.

Executive Briefing: Disarmingly Honest Approach to Closing Sales!

Do you ever leave a sales interaction frustrated that the prospect holds all the cards? Do you have plenty of leads but are struggling to convert them into sales? Not sure why? Are you telling or are you selling? This traditional selling approach leads to miscommunication, long drawn-out sales cycles, and pipelines that are filled with unqualified opportunities and massive dysfunction.

The fact is, over 90% of businesses don’t have a sales process that is consistently followed from start to finish. The buyer has a system and it is designed to defeat the salesperson every time! This 105 minute-seminar will provide an overview of the Sandler System and cover unique questioning strategies that produce improved sales results.

This complimentary session is designed for executives, business owners, and serious sales professionals that want to raise the bar in their organizations.

Lighting for Photography

As countless famous photographers have shown us, it is light that makes a photo.

In this class, we'll discuss and use the many different kinds of light: available light with reflectors, hot-shoe flashes off-camera, "hot-lights," and studio-quality strobes with modifiers. We will talk about and understand the color of light, why light matters, and how to control it. We'll look at lots of photographs (yours, mine, and published professionals') to see how the lighting was made and how we might change the light to improve the photograph. We will do hands-on photography with lighting in class and in the field. You will get the chance to push your camera and flash in new ways.

Prerequisite: Nuts and Bolts (LLART 193), Digital Photography I (LLART 115), or take our quiz: go to www.lifelong.utah.edu or call 801-587-5433. Class is limited to 10. To register or for more information, call 801-587-LIFE (5433) or visit lifelong.utah.edu.
