Pinnacle Acting Presents Boeing Boeing

Pinnacle Acting Company is pleased to announce that it will be bringing the award-winning French comedy Boeing Boeing to Utah for the first time ever.

About Boeing Boeing: Bernard is engaged to Gloria. And to Gabriella. And to Gretchen. Three beautiful flight attendants kept secret from each other only by Bernard’s precise timetables of flights in and out of Paris. But when Boeing invents a faster engine, Bernard’s fiancées converge on his flat at the same time, igniting a mad dash of hidden women and nick-of-time maneuvers as Bernard tries desperately to save his perfect bachelor fantasy. Throw in a surprise visit by Bernard’s amorous old school chum, Robert, and Berthe, the reluctant housekeeper, and, according to Variety and The New York Times, the result is "a roaring success!"

Performances are scheduled for Jan. 9, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25 at the Midvale Performing Arts Center.

The benefits of meditation—physical and emotional health and balance, peace, cultivation of insight and the development of innate wisdom and compassion—are well documented. Yet not every form of meditation is attractive or available to everybody.

In this class, we will explore and experience three meditation practices: Zen (both traditional and Western); Loving Kindness (Metta) meditation, and Mindfulness. See how to incorporate the right practice for you into your life, and receive the benefits meditation has provided for thousands of years.

Perspective Realia: Ten Years of Urban Art

Since 2003, more than 200 University of Utah art majors and community members have painted 24,655 square feet of murals, representing almost five miles of community art in our city. We initiated this project with a broad goal of bettering student artists’ social horizons, and to allow them to connect with people and communities both on and off the University campus. Associate Professor Kim Martinez developed an educational approach that sought to teach critical and social consciousness, promote dialogue across economic, political and educational lines, and to Inspire action within community members and university students.

Bonnie Sucec and Susan Beck Exhibit at Finch Lane Gallery

Susan Beck and Bonnie Sucec collaborate their drawing and imaginative skills to create paired images that showcase both artists’ work in their exhibition “Short Stories.” The artists will discuss their work in a gallery talk during the Salt Lake Gallery Stroll on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m.

Short Stories: Veteran artists Bonnie Sucec and Susan Beck combine their drawing and imaginative skills to create paired images offering different interpretations of the same subject matter. Sucec and Beck have been working together since 1978, but this recent work involves combining a visual description by one artist of a work done in her studio. The output involves using this description, interpreting the information, and incorporating it into a separate drawing by the other artist in her own studio.

Strong partnerships initiate and excite experimental approaches to materials, imagery, and compositional devices as part of a larger practice. The goal is not to duplicate but to achieve a greater personal fluidity within a very complex visual arena.

Tara Carpenter Exhibit at Finch Lane Gallery

Multi-media artist Tara Carpenter straddles the boundary between psychology, sociology and art and asks the viewer to become a participant in the visual art process. Carpenter will discuss her work at a gallery talk at 7 p.m. on Jan. 24.

Tara Carpenter explores the idea of what makes “Art” through several different lenses: price, permanency, materials, labeling, artist statements, and opinions. Each work in the show poses questions about a different lens and asks the viewer to respond in an interactive way. Using clay, string, and viewers’ response to the question, “What is art to you?” the same title that she gives her exhibition, to showcase the many ways art can be created and interpreted. Carpenter connects those responses into a visual installation that blurs the lines of art and science.

Penelope by Shara Worden and Utah Philharmonia

Penelope is a song cycle by composer Sarah Kirkland Snider, with lyrics by playwright Ellen McLaughlin, featuring vocalist Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond. Inspired by Homer’s epic poem, the Odyssey, Penelope is a meditation on memory, identity, and what it means to come home. Suspended somewhere between art song, indie rock and chamber folk, the music of Penelope moves organically from moments of elegiac strings-and-harp reflection to dusky post-rock textures with drums, guitars and electronics, all directed by a strong sense of melody and a craftsman’s approach to songwriting. Ms. Wordan will be joined by members of the Utah Philharmonia conducted by Robert Baldwin.
