Gigantour 2013 Featuring Megadeth and Black Label Society

Founded by Megadeth's Dave Mustaine in 2005, the Gigantour festival is back with an incredible line up of heavy metal masters including headliner Megadeth, as well as Black Label Society, Device, Hellyeah, Newsted (as in Jason!) and Death Division.

“This year’s power-packed lineup is probably the best Gigantour yet, and we’ve had some pretty massive Gigantours over the years. Gigantour 2013 brings four of my favorite bands, each centered around a superstar. With Zakk, David, Vinnie, and Jason there are going to be fans from Ozzy to Disturbed to Pantera to Metallica and everything that’s metal in-between! Don’t miss the metal festival of the summer!” says Mustaine.

Festival doors open at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday August 1 at the Maverik Center. Tickets are $39.50 for upper and lower level seating, $57 for General Admission on the floor (which is standing room only), and available on Ticketmaster.com.

Jewelry Course: Metal Clay – Silver

Silver is the new gold—and not as pricey. Join in on a new jewelry making craze with metal clay. Nearly everyone can create beautiful silver wearable art in a couple of two-hour sessions. This remarkable clay can be formed much like ceramic clay; it can be stamped, carved or impressed with diverse objects to create unique patterns and designs. The first session involves forming and embellishing the jewelry components. The instructor fires jewelry pieces between weekly sessions. Finish your pieces in the second session, fashioning them into artful creations, whether a pendant, pair of earrings or bracelet, ready to wear. To register or for more information, call 801-587-LIFE (5433) or visit lifelong.utah.edu.

Fly Fishing 101

Utah offers an array of excellent rivers for fly fishing. This class is a chance to get out and try the sport in a beautiful high mountain setting. Designed for the novice, this basic hands-on course explores the art and mechanics of fly fishing, including equipment, safety, knots, entomology, and, of course, casting. We will learn some basics in the classroom then travel to a local river for the day to test our new skills.

You are responsible for providing your rod and reel (can be rented at local fly shops), fishing license, sack lunch, sunglasses (essential for eye protection) and either waders and boots or clothes and shoes that can get wet. A selection of flies and other tackle will be provided for our river day. This class is limited to 10. To register or for more information, call 801-587-LIFE (5433) or visit lifelong.utah.edu.

Gathering Wild Mushrooms

Delicate, yet hearty and palette pleasing, mushrooms add texture and flavor to a variety of cuisines and dishes. But which of the thousands of species of mushrooms is edible, and which will kill you? We'll begin to learn this important distinction in class, where we will discuss the basics of mushroom hunting, which mushrooms in Utah and surrounding states are edible, and of course, cooking with mushrooms.

Our field trip will take us to the Uinta mountains, where we will hunt for boletus edulis (porcini), chanterelle, agaricus campestris (button), and morels. Field trip transportation is by carpool. To register or for more information, call 801-587-LIFE (5433) or visit lifelong.utah.edu.

Want to help with PeaceUp's campaign to protect our air, water and land from tar sands mining and refining? Stop one of the world's dirtiest industries from beginning in our bioregion, while building a resilient, empowered community!

At this meeting, we'll gather together to work on ongoing projects, find out how we can help with these efforts and spend time together as a community. Have an idea? This is the place to bring it.

Things we can talk about and work on include, but are not limited to using house parties to build our movement base, inviting our neighbors to upcoming community discussions by canvassing local communities and creating fun events that bring us together and energize us. Food will be provided, and children are welcome! Contact Melanie@PeacefulUprising.org with any questions.

Community Discussion Night: Protecting Our Air from Tar Sands Refining

Join Peaceful Uprising for a community discussion on creating a just and healthy world by protecting our air from tar sands refining.

In Utah, tar sands mining could soon begin—for the first time in the U.S.—and the tar-like oil would be refined in North Salt Lake. Refining tar sands here would harm our air and our health, even more than refining regular crude, making it a major climate justice issue.

Join us to work on creating SOLUTIONS to this human health nightmare, while forging a resilient community that's empowered to take action!
