The Secrets of Screenwriting

Explosions, zombies, swords, sex scenes, three-minute monologues and femme fatales . . . these all mean nothing without the foundation of a great story. In this course, we will use a shooting script of a movie currently in theaters to biopsy the bones of visual storytelling. You'll learn how to "read" movies, build three dimensional heroes, up the stakes, create obstacles, employ reversals and be able to use The 9 Ancient Questions to birth the blockbuster in your head. Randall Lake Art Exhibit

Randall Lake will open his Salt Lake studio to the public, something that hasn't been done in 10 years, bringing back what used to be an annual tradition to display over sixtey of his new and old works. A select few will be marked 20 percent off.

Specializing in realism for the past 39 years, Lake has recently started experimenting with landscapes. He is quick to point out that he is still, in fact, a realist but a change of pace and a change of location has focused him to start painting something different in terms of theme and techniques.

The show opening will be from 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 10. Lake will continue to display the show through the weekend from 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 11-13. To read more about Randall Lake and see his work online, go to www.Randalllake.com or www.Facebook.com/RandallLakeArt.

Screen Printing

Made famous by Andy Warhol in the '60s, screen printing's distinctive renderings have been transposed onto posters and tee shirts for years.

In this class, you'll learn the step-by-step process of screen printing through both demonstration and hands-on experience. During the first class, you'll be shown the various ways of creating an image: computer-based graphics, drawing by hand or cutting an image or images from magazines. Next, you'll be shown the ins and outs of using screen printing equipment, gain experience printing a simple image to paper, learn to print a two-color image to paper, and finally, print a one-color image to a wearable tee-shirt. Please bring an 8 1/2 x 11-inch sketchbook, drawing pencils, and an eraser to class. Special fee includes screenprinting screen and a tee shirt to take home at the end of class.

Class is limited to 10 people; no artistic experience is necessary. To register or for more information, call 801-587-LIFE (5433) or visit lifelong.utah.edu.
