Add this one to the “Am I Taking Crazy Pills?” file—then cross reference it to the “Gary Herbert Campaign-Fund Call List” file.

The finalists of the this year’s Governor’s Excellence in Energy Awards include:

Energy Community Leader of the year: Anadarko Petroleum Corp.

Anadarko is one of the world’s largest oil and gas exploration and production companies, based in Houston, TX (where else?). You may remember Anadarko in connection with the Deep Water Horizon oil spill fiasco/disaster. Does the photo below help?

Energy Innovator of the Year: EkoCoke: Clean Coke Technology

No, not EcoCoke, which is Coca Cola in a biodegradable bottle—we’re talking coke as in steel blast furnaces, which is coal, a good-old fossil fuel, burned in the absence of oxygen. We like this image of foundry coke on EkoCoke's under-construction website:

Environmental Leader of the Year, Rio Tinto Kennecott

Yep, the guys who brought you the world’s largest man-made hole in the earth—whose corporate motto could be: "Downward and Downward."

To be fair, finalists also included First Wind, a wind energy company with 165 turbines near Milford, and Enel Green Power North America, Inc. for geo-thermal energy. It’s also fair to note that Enel Green Power is a Massachusetts-based company that has one geothermal plant in Beaver County and First Wind is Boston-based. Apparently, the guv couldn’t find a local alternative energy company to encourage.
