We're just weeks away from the biggest gift-giving holiday of the year. And while you've made your own wishlist and checked it twice, let's not forget the true purpose of the day. It's about giving, remember?

As that reminder sinks in, consider this: gifts that give. By now, we're all familiar with stellar companies like TOMS, People Water and FEED that give back a portion of their proceeds to benefit a worthy cause.

Add Denik to that list.

The local company with a slogan “Art Can Change The World” began with a few Utah State University college students who simply wanted to make a difference.

Their line of journals and notebooks recently joined the TOMS Marketplace, and can also be purchased on Denik’s website. (A pretty fab idea for a stocking stuffer, if you ask me.)

We chatted with Denik’s Director of Analytics and Marketing, Brent Crosby, to get the lowdown on what it’s all about.

SLM: How did Denik get started?

BC: We were all a group of college students at Utah State. The intent was to create a company that used artwork for making a difference in the world.

SLM: Why notebooks as your product of choice?

BC: We were unsatisfied with the current choices of journals. We felt there wasn't a journal out there that reflected the individuality of the user.

SLM: Who designs the cover art for your notebooks?

BC: People from all around the world submit their artwork. We gather up the best ones and place them on the cover.  Our artists range from award winning comic book illustrators to virtually unknown high school kids.

SLM: How does Denik give back to those in need?

BC: With each book sold we donate $1 to the building of a school. This year, we’re assisting the building of a middle school in Mali, Africa.

Our belief is that art can change the world, and this is a mission we wish to accomplish through the betterment of education. Every year we partner with nonprofit organizations that build and maintain the schools in different parts of the world.

We also give back five percent of sales to the cover artists as a royalty.

SLM: What makes your company unique in comparison to other companies and products for a cause?

BC: It’s our approach to making a difference. We strongly feel that an education is the first step in escaping poverty, and that's why our focus is on school building. We also provide a way for any talented artist to get their work published, something many artists dream of.
