Local women will be strutting their stuff in the Olanova Eco Fashion Show Fundraiser, "Re-Fashion Takes Action," on May 31.

Olanova is a non-profit organization that raises money for women in need, both locally and internationally by hiring single moms and immigrants as seamstresses to create eco-friendly clothings. Fashionistas who want to support a great cause to help other women and local entrepreneurs are encouraged to get involved.

One of the top goals of this event is to show the diversity of cultures and women in Utah. "You're not going to only see the skinny size twos—you're going to see it all," says Sonia Thomas, founder of the company. "It's a way [for women] to express themselves, to serve, to motivate each other, to bond—feel the sisterhood." Women are also encouraged to bring the men in their lives to support the cause.

The fashion for the event comes from outside donations, and Thomas has even taken some from her own closet. She says more clothing donations are needed, and hopefully, enought money will be raised to hire more full-time seamstresses to meet goal of providing more jobs for women in need. "Most [of my employees] are refugees and single moms who don't speak English yet," Thomas says. "But they still need to provide for their families."

The event will not be a typical fashion show. "You're going to experience something you haven't seen in any other event," Thomas says. "We'll have some life stories and testimonials. I want to unite the community over fashion."

All donations are welcome. "You don't have to have a million dollars to help others," Thomas says. "We can't do it alone. We really need a lot of sponsors and community support."

The event will be held at Azevedo Studios, 870 E. North Union Ave., Midvale. To purchase tickets, call 801-318-0356 or visit olanova.com. General admission is $15 or $30 for VIP access if purchased before May 15. Tickets purchased after this date will be an additional $5.
