Good music is hard to come by, there is one genre that is stalwartly holding its own on the Billboard charts and is rapidly appearing in more and more personal iTunes libraries. It is the singer/songwriter genre, and what is so appealing about this type of music is its myriad of innovative sounds and artists, producing songs that are new, refreshing, and beautiful to listen to.

SLC has long been a favorite spot for artists to perform, from Billboard toppers to start-up bands, but nothing is more anticipated in the valley than an artist returning home.

Such a local treasure can be found in the talent of Erin Barra, a Salt Lake City native who will be coming back from Brooklyn, New York for the first annual Salt Lake City Songwriters Circle. Barra will act as host and performer as the event is launched at the State Room on Jan. 17.

Barra will not be alone. She will be the concluding set after four other artists perform a traditional "Writers in the Round." Scheduled to perform are Talia Keys, drummer and vocalist of local band Marinade; Sam Smith of the Samuel Smith Band; singer/songwriter, poet, and photographer Jay William Henderson; and Amir Jackson, founder and director of the youth organization Nurture the Creative Mind.

This event will be held at the State Room, 638 S. State Street, SLC. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the show will start at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10. For more information call 801-596-3560.
