While you may not think of Downward Dog and Standing Bow as athletic terms, the USA Yoga Federation, a non-profit promoting yoga postures as a sport, uses them as such. A growing number of people are participating in competitive yoga, and on Saturday, Jan. 12, the public is invited to watch USA Yoga show off their skills at the Utah and Wyoming Regional USA Yoga Asana Championship at Weber State University in Ogden.
The championship demands five compulsory postures and two advanced postures from competitors, and will conclude with an adult male, female and youth participant who will advance to compete in the National USA Yoga Championship in March 2013.
The USA Yoga Federation was founded by Rajashree Choudhury, one of the world's foremost yoga experts and wife of Bikram Choudhury of Bikram Yoga fame. It is on its way to becoming the national governing body of yoga and also hopes to one day qualify yoga as an Olympic sport.
