Brand new to SLC and just in time for the holidays is Christkindlmarkt, a fresh cultural experience for the whole family.

The highly-anticipated event is fashioned after authentic German Christmas markets, complete with wooden vendor booths decorated to the iconic style. The celebration will take place Nov. 29–Dec. 1 at This Is the Place Heritage Park from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Christkindlmarkt features some of the finest food, festivities and charitable events, along with jolly old St. Nicholas.

On Nov. 29 at 6 p.m., the St. Martin Lantern Parade will commence. Lanterns will light up the streets as children march to celebrate St. Martin's heroic acts of service. Children may bring their own lanterns or purchase lanterns at the market for around $10. Music will accompany the revelry, provided by a children's choir of around 300. A centurion on horseback will escort the procession. Afterward, John C. Wester, the bishop of Salt Lake City, will bring the story to life and illuminate the Christmas tree.

The St. Nicholas Day parade, held Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at 6 p.m., will include a shoe drive benefitting the Salt Lake Rescue Mission. The public is encouraged to bring lightly-used children's shoes for this cause. This holds to the tradition of St. Nicholas himself, who filled shoes with goodies, much like the Americanized stocking stuffers.
