Caring for your kisser is a challenge in the winter, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors. Luckily, there's a whole slew of products out there for keeping your lips luscious and warding off even the peskiest lip problems.

Like all other beauty routines, your lips need maintenance, too. And caring for your lips in the winter means more than just applying the occasional Chap Stick.

Step One: Exfoliate.

The Lip Scrub by Sara Happ, $24, Got Beauty

Yep. Even your lips need a good occasional scrub. A gentle lip scrub will slough off dead skin and leave your lips feeling ultra soft.

Step Two: Moisturize and Protect.

Supergoop! AcaiFusion Lip Balm with SPF 30, $8.50, Ulta

SPF is a year-round must, especially if you regularly hit the slopes. Supergoop! plays triple duty to protect from the sun, fight free radicals and repair oxidation damage.

Step Three: Skip the stick.

Laura Mercier HydraTint Lip Balm with SPF 15, $20, Nordstrom

It's no secret that lipstick can be drying, especially the matte and long wearing stuff. Give your lips a break and try on a tinted moisturizing balm instead. Think of it as killing two birds with one stone.

Step Four: Treat it.

Syper Lysine+ Cold Sore Treatment, $6, Walgreens

Every once in a while, sun exposure, stress and illness can lead to problems like cold sores. I'll admit I've tried just about everything. The best thing I've found is all natural and considerably cheaper than a prescription or other OTC treatments, and you can apply it as liberally as you want. In my experience, it dries the sucker out in just a few days.
