Forget the Olympics. The folks at Lunatic Fringe have clipped and dyed their way to hairstyling gold. The salon, which now boasts 11 locations in five states, nabbed the Salon Team of the Year award and snagged nominations for the Avant Garde and Newcomer Stylist of the Year categories.

Awarded by the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA), the competition is one of the most prestigious hairstyling contests in the country. Each year, participants compete for this award put on by the Professional Beauty Association (PBA). The PBA Beauty Week is the largest beauty event in North America.

To vie for the award, Lunatic Fringe submitted five images of five different models, illustrating the team’s “diversity, versatility, creativity and expertise in hairstyling.”

We sat down with Lunatic Fringe co-owner Angie Katsanevas to get the scoop on the award and what sets the 12-year-old salon apart.

SLM: Congrats! Tell us what it means to be recognized by NAHA?

AK: We are so proud and honored. Winning NAHA is the most prestigious award you can receive in the hair industry.

SLM: What makes Lunatic Fringe such a unique salon?

AK: Lunatic Fringe is a business that creates a viable career path within the hair industry. We are focused on education, team culture and creating an excellent guest experience. We provide a positive, safe work environment that stylists and guests alike want to be a part of.

SLM: Lunatic Fringe just opened a small salon inside the new Chalk Garden Co-op downtown. Where did this idea come from?

AK: We were honored to have been approached by the Chalk Garden. They asked us to team up with them as they were looking for businesses that were like-minded and focused on a unique product and a high-end guest experience.

SLM: Why is it so important to Lunatic Fringe to give back to the community?

AK: It is important to us as a company to raise social awareness. We have a large network of people that together can make a difference. It is our community that has supported us and helped us to build our business over the last 13 years. We are always happy to give back.
