In the hills north of downtown lies Salt Lake City’s renowned Upper Avenues, filled with unique shops and cafes in the midst of Victorian-inspired homes and single-level bungalows. You’ll even find a low-key day spa tucked away within this quiet community.

Here are some of our favorite businesses, along with a home on the market in the neighborhood.

Hatch Family Chocolates, 376 Eighth Ave., SLC, 801-532-4912,

This small business with a huge following has settled into its new location on Eighth Avenue and brought local’s favorite treats with them, like a caramel apples and chocolate-covered bananas. The Hatch family has crafted treats in SLC since 1917 but made a national splash when co-owners Steve Hatch and Katie Masterson starred in The Little Chocolatiers on TLC.

Ninth Avenue Treasures, 704 9th Ave., SLC, 801-355-1233

This shop exudes warmth with its eccentric antiques and combines the feeling of walking through Grandma’s attic with the hope of finding that quirky piece to impress guests. Only a block from Avenues baseball diamonds, peruse this shop’s classic artifacts as a break from the game.

Avenues Day Spa, 455 Seventh Ave., SLC, 801-519-8181,

It’s easy to pass by without noticing the tiny sign next to the front door marking the Avenues Day Spa, but inside, the the space induces relaxation. Everything from the music to the staff adds to the resting, yet invigorating, atmosphere. Take in a hot stone massage and lose the stress.

Corrine and Jack Sweet Public Library, 455 F St., SLC, 801-594-8651

It might be the smallest library around, but it certainly has enough books and a great view that make up for the tight space. Patrons are greeted by the large children’s section when they walk in, setting the tone for a family-friendly place to spend the afternoon.

Close to downtown, yet high in the Upper Avenues, this home offers a short commute and crisp mountain air with the scent of pine, aspen and flowers, including heather in the front yard. It’s a dream home for lovers of modern architecture. Large windows flood rooms with natural light, and, in the 1990s, the home was given a new master bedroom, master bath, living room and kitchen, which includes a large island, fireplace and separate freezer and fridge paneled to match the cabinets. The second floor balcony offers a private view of the valley below, and the home’s two patios are especially popular on Fourth of July, when fireworks illuminate the valley floor stretching toward the Great Salt Lake. The backyard features a wild, open garden just steps away from hiking, biking and sledding in the foothills.
