Floating on a foam board and paddling your way through the water sounds pretty easy, right?
Now, try it using a ten-foot paddle and do it standing up. Welcome to the world of Standup Paddle Boarding. It's easier than you think. A little bit of balance, some upper body strength and a love of water is all it takes.
This weekend, on June 16, you can watch the experts (or participate) on the Jordanelle Reservoir at the Pau Hana Park City Standup Paddle Boarding Cup Competition.
There will be races with every level of expertise, ranging from beginner to skilled professionals. The 12'6 Elite Race is for experienced boarders only, while the 12'6 Open Race is divided into many different age categories for all levels of boarders: 16-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60+.
There will be other races for even more fun in the water like the Surf Board Shape Fun Race, Youth FUN Races for children and teens and the Coed Tandem Race for men and women teams. If you're just beggining or already a pro, there's a race for you. Registration can be found at pcsupcup.com.
Park City Stand Up Paddle Boarding also guides tours around Jordanelle and other nearby lakes and reservoirs, and a team of veteran paddlers can teach you how to perfect your stroke.
The event this weekend will be sponsored by many companies, including The St. Regis Deer Valley, ryantech, Canyons Resort, Healthy Happy Human Beings, Nature's Wraps, Quick Blade, Riviera and the Waldorf Astoria. These companies will also be providing many of the prizes for the winners of the competitions.
