A couple of potentially excellent shows roll into SLC this week, let's examine our best options.
San Francisco rockers Howlin' Rain, classified loosely as indie rock these days, who clearly owe an overt indebtedness to early '70s music as well, headline a 9 p.m. show at Urban Lounge on Monday.
The quintet, pictured above, is touring behind "Russian Wilds," released last month, which is likely a shoo-in for many critics year-end 'best-of' lists when those get compiled later this year. Yes, this band is quite good and deserve to be the critical darlings they've become. Kudos to The Urban Lounge and promoter Will Sartain for landing such an acclaimed band while they continue building their audience. Even though having a late night on a Monday is anathema to most, these guys are worth it. Tickets remain on sale at 24tix.com for $8, plus fees.
Also this week, the Capitol Theater and the Utah Opera continues their presentation of "Elixir of Love" on Monday and Wednesday night. Both shows start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets remain available for both performances through arttix.com.
Also Monday night, the EnergySolutions Arena could be a fun place to be as the Jazz would look to be heavy favorites as the moribund Detroit Pistons roll into town. Smithstix.com still has seats for sale.
And weeknight rockers can head back to the Urban Lounge on Wednesday for venerable ska/reggae/punk rockers, The Aggrolites, who are in town for a 10 p.m. show. This should be a fun evening as the Los Angeles-based band provides good grooves and big bursts of energized tunes. Tickets remain available through 24tix.com.
