Bountiful school Viewmont High's debate team started only five years ago, but was still one of the teams skilled enough to reach the finals this year held in Texas. The National Debate competition is a huge honor and a chance for high school debaters to win scholarships and compete with other teams from around the country.

Debate, unlike many other school activities (sports), does not receive funding from the district. Debaters have to raise the money themselves for competitions, buses and other needed supplies.

Viewmont's debate team needs to raise $4,000 more in order to go to Nationals. So they've got a few fundraising events batting around.

On Saturday, May 21st, Wendy's in Centerville will donate 10% of their earnings to VHS Debate from sales. The debaters themselves will also be in the parking lot doing a car wash that day. Sounds like a good plan to me—get a bite to eat, watch other people wash your car, and support a local high school team.

But if Wendy's isn't your thing, Jamba Juice in Bountiful is also lending a hand. On Saturday, May 28th, 10% of their earnings will go to VHS Debate (but you've got to mention that you're supporting VHS Debate, so they can get credit for the sale). Go get yourself one of those new fruit and veggie combos they have. It'll be a nice way to cool down in the (hopefully) hot weather.
