Mother's Day is popularly conceived as a high-pressure Hallmark holiday, ostensibly meaningless except to the superficially sainted mothers involved.

As a mother of two and child of a mother, I resent that image - it may be stupid commercial sentimentality that engendered this holiday, but if we're going to have it at all, let's just do it without the snark and make it real.

So, once you outgrow the childish notion that the best presents have to be unwrapped, and stop joking that all mothers want is "for everyone to get along," you can face the fact that, in fact, that IS what all mothers want.

TIME is what we want.

With you, our offspring.

Hence, though I hate to admit it, brunch.

And it's brunch mainly because M-Day is on Sunday, which is something else I have always resented, being more of a tequila-swilling than tea-sipping mama. Why can't we have Mother's Day on Saturday night and do it up right?

Oh well. I'm not so much the Hallmark type of Mom. Here is where you can take yours for a maternal celebration. I've added some pix of famous moms, for inspiration...
