Gnomes as art? Well they are art, folk art, yes, and they exist in patches all around the city as a sort of running joke of folklore. Now the Salt Lake Arts Center is asking you to create your best lawn sculpture, gnome or otherwise, for a city-wide exhibit and a chance to win $2,000 (given to the best lawn adornment). The accepted gnomes, flamingos, alligators (whatever, you've seen those in Sky Mall), will be placed in yards and public spaces around the Wasatch Front in a giant artsy, folksy display.
The catch is, you have to make the art. No pulling your favorite gnome out of the garden and dropping it off at the center. And that Travelocity gnome better stay out of town.
There's a registration form and other stuff about the contest here. The deadline for submissions is April 13 and the sculptures will be on view and June 17. The art center will provide tours and maps of the front-yard displays. The winning artwork will be announced in July.
