T he staff at the Salt Lake Chamber Women's Business Center (WBC) love to help women create successful lives in the areas of business, community leadership, and personal fulfillment. "The WBC upholds the unique gifts and contributions of women in our community, because we understand the great benefits to society when women share their intelligence, intuition and aspirations in life," says WBC Program Director Lavanya Mahate.

The most successful women business owners "think big" from the start. Training and coaching for women entrepreneurs at the WBC stress the importance of laying the foundation for business growth from day one, regardless of the business owner's current plans for growth. Through programs such as the Business Women's Forum and the Women's Network for Entrepreneurial Training the experiences of women who have achieved high business growth are converted into practical learning programs to help every woman aspiring to lead a flourishing enterprise.

"The imparting of knowledge must move beyond motivational commentary to focus on the nitty-gritty specifics of best practices and mistakes to avoid," Mahate says. "We also highlight the importance of intuition, inspiration and imagination- qualities that are necessary to stay alive and fresh in the business arena. "Starting a business is not separate from fulfilling your life, home, and worldly aspirations- they exist together, " Mahate says. In order to have a successful business, you need to have a strong personal foundation."

The WBC is based on three simple areas of development: Learning, growing and balancing. WBC clients learn through business essential trainings that promote understanding of the business world, free consulting that supports business growth, including assistance with marketing and business plan writing and business loan information and guidance.

The clients' knowledge base grows through strength-building networking opportunities, signature leadership events such as the Athena Awards Luncheon and Women in Business Conference and referrals to community

resources. They learn to transform busy-ness into balance as they work, play, and live, and learn from progressive companies that promote workplace flexibility through the Salt Lake Chamber's Workplace Flexibility Initiative. The Center also facilitates the National Sloan Awards for Excellence in Workplace Flexibility program that recognizes exemplary companies providing workplace flexibility.

The WBC actively supports the community by reaching out to schools, community centers, and private groups. WBC Outreach invites and inspires women and girls of all ages to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams, to do what they love and to love what they do.

Funded in part through a grant by the U.S.Small Business Administration and community sponsors, the WBC is always looking for ways to insure its future in order to continue its services to entrepreneurs. "When you contribute to WBC, you make an investment not only in the success of local women in business, but in the success, economic growth, and strengthening of your community," Mahate says.

For sponsorship opportunities and contributions please contact Mahate 801 328-5066, or by email at lmahate@slchamber.com. While the WBCs focus is on women in business, entrepreneurial men are also welcome to receive services offered through the WBC.
